Socioeconomic Status and Health in Children and Adolescents – Results of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS)

Introduction: The influence of socioeconomic status (SES) on the health of children and adolescents was investigated. Methods: The data emanated from the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS), conducted by the Robert Koch Institute from May 2003 to May 2006 (n = 17 641, age 0–17 years). Socioeconomic status was measured via parental reporting of their school and professional education, professional status, and net household income. Health was assessed in terms of general health status, psychological or behavioural difficulties, and obesity. Results: Children and adolescents from the lowest group of SES are half as likely to have good general health as those in the highest SES group (OR: 0.52, 95% CI: 0.47–0.59). In addition, they were signi-ficantly more commonly affected by psychological and behavioural difficulties (OR: 3.78, 95% CI: 3.00–4.77) and obesity (OR: 2.32, 95% CI: 2.01–2.69).
Discussion: These
results concur with results from the USA, Great Britain and the Scandinavian countries. They reinforce the need fortargeted prevention and health promotion in children and adolescents.
